Keynote Address – The Path to Success with WordPress: Business, Blogging and Community

WordPress is software like no other. Every fourth website you encounter was built using it. Creative skills are mastered with it. Businesses harness its versatility. It has the power to bring together people from diverse backgrounds. Yet to so many, it’s “just” software. As a blogger, web designer, marketer, educator, and entrepreneur since long before its existence, I’ve watched it grow into a worldwide phenomenon. My own path to success is intertwined with a decade of WordPress use. Clearly, there’s more to this software than just a free install.

Destination Anywhere: Creating the Ultimate DMO or Directory website

In this session, I will be discussing how to create the perfect directory or Destination Marketing Organization site from the ground up. A directory site or DMO site is regionally focused and typically has many different components that overlap and connect. I’ll discuss the best tools and practices for building these components and also how to organize and tie the content together.

I’ll start by laying the groundwork and organizing the different elements (Business Listings, Places to Go, Events, Maps, etc). I’ll then continue with examples of excellent themes and plugins that can be extremely helpful for this type of site. If you like to get your hands dirty, then you’ll enjoy the section on creating and linking custom post types, including custom fields and user generated content.

Lastly, I will include how to monetize your directory site and how to promote and grow your DMO for your intended audiences.

Typography and WordPress

On a website, the culmination of the design and content tell a story. Noticing this may often be subconscious by both the person designing, and the person interacting with the website. We want to bring the most powerful and versatile element of the design-side of this process out and think about it intentionally. With any good story, a fitting narrator can make a very big difference. Does your type and styling speak and look the part you’re asking it to? I’ll show some studies and tests performed that show how much typography may matter to people who don’t even consciously notice.

We will discuss ways to improve your sites readability, typographic style, and show how some of this can be made easier with WordPress through plugins or simple edits to your style.
